Poulsbo, WA
📍Poulsbo, Washington
I just got back from an other weekend visit to the great state of Washington. On our last day, we stopped and visited the little Scandinavian themed town of Poulsbo.
Long before Poulsbo became known as “Little Norway,” Scandinavian sailors brought old legends with them across the sea. Stories of ghost ships, spirits hidden in the fog, and things waiting beneath dark water.
Along Liberty Bay and Hood Canal, locals still talk about strange lights drifting silently across the water with no boats attached to them. Shadowy vessels appearing through thick fog… then vanishing completely. Voices and distant bells carrying across the bay long after the shoreline has gone quiet.
In Nordic folklore, the sea was never empty. There are legends such as that of the Draugr said to be the dead returning from the water. And the Nøkk, a spirit said to lure people toward dangerous depths. It was also said that ghost ships would appear before storms or tragedy.
Many Scandinavian fishermen believed fog could blur the line between this world and something else entirely.
If you’re in Poulsbo, standing at the water’s edge and the bay goes silent, it’s easy to understand why.
